Tournament: April 26 - May 3: A Division 8 teams in the draw. The
semi finals were played at 10:00 on Saturday, May 3rd, a beautiful,
sunny day.
...In the other semi-final, Ben Murphy/Paul Randall fought well and
solidly against the aggressive team of Andy Bielanski/Merill May.
Andy and Merill took the first set at 6-4 with a superb batch of
poaches and smashes. Ben and Paul answered in the second set at
6-2. The 3rd set produced fireworks. Andy and Merill
continued their angled volleys and sharp overhead putaways and Ben and
Paul amazed us by returning most of them. Then a big, atheleteic
bound by Merill to catch a lob to his backhand looked like a winner.
Instead, Merill went down to the pavement with a twisted knee. Andy/Merill
retired. Ben and Paul -- 4-6, 6-2, 4-3.
The final was played at 1:30 after a little resuscitation of Ben
and Paul. Foot long taquitos with all the fixings were available for
the teams and audience.
The final pitted Kim Calvert/Jim Bent against Ben Murphy/Paul
Randall. (Side note - Ben and Paul had never played as partners
before.) This match was real competition from the very
beginning. Lobs were smashed, smashes were returned, and sharp,
angled volleys were the successful answer from all four players.
Kim/Jim took the first set in a tie-break. Paul and Ben came back in
the second set, when almost no one held serve, to win at 6-2.
The third set is hard to describe. Paul and Ben were on a roll
and made very few unforced errors. Serving presented problems
for Kim and Jim. Paul and Ben took the 3rd set at 6-0.
Final score: 6-7, 6-2, 6-0.
